How to Answer “Why Do You Want to Work Here?” in an Interview

It may sound simple, but it’s actually a test. Employers aren’t just looking for flattery—they want to know if you understand the company, if you’re motivated, and whether you’re a good fit for the role.

Why This Question Matters

When an interviewer asks this question, they’re evaluating:

  • Your knowledge of the company

  • Your motivation for the role

  • How well you align with the company culture

  • Whether you’re genuinely interested or just applying everywhere

A strong answer shows that you’ve done your homework and are excited to contribute.

The Formula for a Great Answer

A simple framework: Company → Role → You.

1. Company: Show You’ve Done Your Research

Start by mentioning something specific about the company that excites you. This could be:

  • Their mission or values

  • Products or services

  • Recent projects or achievements

Example:

2. Role: Connect Your Skills

Next, explain why this role fits your skills, experience, or interests.

3. You: Show What You Bring

End by briefly noting what you can contribute to the company.
