Why New Grads May Struggle to Find Jobs—and How to Get Ahead

By Bobby Romadka

I read an article recently that should scare you. Here's the summary:

Right now, about 9% of recent college graduates are unemployed, and experts warn that number could rise to 25% soon. That means one out of four graduates might struggle to find a job—even with a degree.

Why? Because the job market is changing fast, and high school AND college isn’t preparing students for everything they now need.

AI Is Taking Over Many Entry-Level Tasks

Artificial intelligence can now do many tasks that new workers used to do, such as:

  • Basic writing

  • Data entry

  • Customer support

  • Simple research

Because of this, companies don’t need as many entry-level workers. That means:

  • Fewer jobs

  • More competition

  • Higher expectations for each new hire

A Degree Isn’t Enough Anymore

For years, students were told:

“Go to college and you’ll get a good job.”

But today, companies want more than just a diploma. They want young workers who can:

  • Speak confidently

  • Work well with others

  • Think for themselves

  • Solve problems

  • Communicate clearly

Many students are smart, but struggle with real face-to-face conversations and workplace communication.

Soft Skills Are the Real Advantage

AI can write an email—but it can’t:

  • Build trust

  • Communicate with feeling

  • Handle a tough conversation

  • Ask for a raise

  • Lead a team

These human skills are what employers value most now.

Who Will Struggle—and Who Will Succeed

If unemployment hits 25%, the young adults who struggle most will be those who:

  • Only rely on their degree

  • Avoid challenge

  • Don’t build communication skills

  • Can’t explain their value

Those who succeed will be the ones who:

  • Learn to talk confidently

  • Build soft skills

  • Improve themselves

  • Take on real-world experiences

Final Thought

AI is not the real threat—being unprepared is.

The job market is changing fast, but students who focus on:

  • Communication

  • Confidence

  • Real-world experience

  • Human interaction

will not only get jobs—they will stand out.

Because no matter how advanced AI becomes, companies will always need people who can connect, talk, think, and lead.
